很多、大量用法

在英语中，表示"很多、大量"含义的单词除了many和much以

外，还有许多较常用的词组。笔者现根据它们的用法，将其归纳为如

下三类：

第一类：后面既可以跟可数名词也可以跟不可数名词。这一类较

常见的词组有：a lot of = lots of，plenty of，a wealth of，

quantities of。例如：

There are a lot / lots of books on the shelf. 书架上有很多书。

There was a lot / lots of money in the safe. 保险柜里有很多钱。

There's plenty of room in my bag. 我的包里有大量的空间。

He has plenty of good novels. 他有很多不错的小说。

This is a book with a wealth of illustrations. 这是一本有大量插

图的书。

He had a wealth of opportunity to succeed, but he gave up

at last. 他曾有过很多次成功的机会，但他最后还是放弃了。

She has quantities of good clothes. 她有很多好看的衣服。

They spent quantities of money on building a huge bridge.

他们用巨资建造了一座巨大的桥。

注意： a lot of，lots of，plenty of，a wealth of，quantities

of引导的短语在句子中作主语时，谓语动词的数要与of后的名词的数

保持一致。

第二类：后面只能跟可数名词。这一类较常见的词组有a (large /

good) number of = numbers of，scores of。例如：

They bought a (large / good) number of English-Chinese

dictionaries in the

bookstore yesterday. 他们昨天在书店里买了很多英汉字典。

Last Sunday I saw numbers of foreigners in the street. 上星期

天我在街上看到很多外国人。

I've been there scores of times. 我去过那儿很多次了。

注意：a (large / good) number of，numbers of，scores of引

导的短语在句中作主语时，句子的谓语要用复数形式。

第三类：后面只能跟不可数名词。这一类较常用的词组有a great

/ good deal of，a (large / great) quantity of。例如：

We have learned a great deal of valuable experience from

them. 我们向他们学到了很多宝贵的经验。

He collected a quantity of interesting information. 他收集了

大量有趣的信息。

注意：a great / good deal of，a (large / great) quantity of引

导的短语作主语时，句子的谓语要用单数形式。

此外，many a也表示"很多、许多"，后面也只能跟可数名词，但

具体用法与many不同，many a后面的名词要用单数，句子的谓语也

要用单数形式。例如：

Many a student is planting trees. 很多学生在植树。

Many a true word is spoken in jest. 笑谈之中有真话。（谚语）
