A new family moved in next door and I got to meet the mother of the family, Lydia.

Lydia is Korean, and her family moved to our city so her husband could go to graduate school. We started talking,

and she was apologetic about how bad her English was, but I didn’t care. I knew how hard it was to learn a second

language. I enjoyed chatting with Lydia as we watched our kids play.

It was what came next that challenged me: Lydia asked if I’d be willing to help her with her English.

Now, I am not a teacher. I admire teachers, and I’m grateful for teachers, and it’s because I admire what they do so

much that I was very, very sure that I couldn’t do it myself.

But Lydia was sure that she wanted my help. I was doubtful. I wasn’t sure my “help” was even worth being called

by that name.

But because she asked me, I said “yes.”

And that was the beginning of

friendship. Lydia and I spent afternoons sitting together and reading the

newspaper, and as we did, she asked me questions when she had them — questions about language, yes, but also

questions about the new culture she found herself in.

In turn, I asked my own questions, growing curious about her home country and culture. We bonded over our

shared faith and our struggles as mothers of kids with special needs. When I complimented (

恭维

)her cooking, she

began to teach me about Korean food, eventually leading to a shared trip to explore the Korean grocery stores in our

city.

Because of Lydia, I learned more about my own hometown than I ever could have learned by myself.

I’m still not sure that I’m any good as a teacher. But I’m grateful I said “yes” when my neighbor asked me to help

her with her English. That meant spending extra time with my neighbor, and that extra time meant she didn’t remain

just my neighbor. She became my friend.

1

What was Lydia sorry about?

A

Her bad English. B

Her carelessness.

C

Nobody teaching her English. D

Her poor life in a new place.

2

What can be concluded from the fourth paragraph?

A

The author admired teachers.

B

The author wanted to be a teacher.

C

The author didn’t want to help Lydia.

D

The author was not confident in helping Lydia.

3

Why was the author grateful at the last paragraph?

A

She managed to learn English well.

B

She made friends with her neighbor.

C

She learned how to cook Korean food.

D

She realized her dream of being a teacher.

4

What can we learn from the passage?

A

No pains, no gains.

B

A friend in need is a friend indeed.

C

To help others is to help ourselves.

D

Where there is a will, there is a way.

At times we all get angry when we are driving. It might be because we are stuck in a traffic jam or

stuck behind a very slow driver. t might be because we think another driver has done something very stupid and

dangerous. Whatever the reason, it seems that getting angry in a car is something which happens more and more often

and there is now a special term for it: "road rage". Some experts even think that road rage is a kind of mental illness!

How can we recognize this "illness" of road rage?

There are two kinds of road rage: aggressive driving and aggressive reactions to the way other people are driving.

Aggressive driving can take different forms:

●Driving much faster than the speed limit.

●Increasing your speed very quickly.

●Driving very close behind the car in front and sounding the horn or flashing the headlights.

●Changing lanes very suddenly and blocking another car.

●Moving into a parking space where another ear is trying to park.

There are also different reactions to the way other people are driving. These include:

●Making rude signs at people.

●Shouting at people and threatening them.

●Deliberately driving into another person's car.

●Hitting somebody.

●Using a weapon such as a baseball bat, or even a gun or a knife.

Road rage is certainly not a joke. There have been incidents of road rage which have led to serious injuries and

even murder. Experts think that one reason for road rage is that films show a lot of examples of fast and aggressive

driving such as car chases where this kind of driving seems to he positive.

Experts also think that the punishments for dangerous driving are not serious enough. Experience shows that

driving problems can be controlled

but it takes a long time. In the UK in the last 30 years

the police have been quite

successful in reducing the number of people who drink and drive. They are now working to stop people using mobile

phones when they are driving. Let's hope they can have the same success with road rage.

1

Which of the following describes aggressive reactions to the way other people are driving

A

Making polite signs at people.

B

Shouting at people and threatening them.

C

Driving much faster than the speed limit.

D

Moving into a parking space where another car is trying to park.

2

Road rage happens possibly because______.

A

we are in a fast-changing society

B

it won't cause serious injuries or death

C

the drivers themselves have done something stupid

D

the drivers won't get severe punishments for dangerous driving

3

What's the tone of the last paragraph

A

Sad.

C

Optimistic.

B

Cold.

D

Exciting.

The Oklahoma teen’s eyes were covered by two blindfolds (

眼罩

) for the big surprise: being reunited with

23.(8分)

her father, James, after 12-year separation.

“I had actually discussed with her the night before at a restaurant and talked over the details of where we would go

and how we would pull it off,” said Amanda, Rory Beth’s mother.

A video shows Amanda led her blindfolded daughter out of their car and guided her across the parking lot of

Broken Arrow Lanes in Broken Arrow.

Little did she know, her father was on the sidewalk holding a birthday cake that read, “Happy Birthday Rory Beth,

Love Dad.” When the teen slowly pulled down her blindfolds, she was dumbfounded. Both the father and daughter

stood silently looking at each other until James finally walked over and hugged her. James only broke their embrace to

look at his daughter and hold her face. “There were definitely lots of tears from myself, her brothers, and even a few

bystanders,” said Amanda.

James was a truck driver who spent a lot of time on the road, and Amanda split with him when Rory Beth was a

baby. “It was hard to figure out how to make it work,” Amanda said. Amanda felt Rory Beth was now old enough to

understand and to ask any questions she may have, so the reunion happened.

The birthday surprise was on June 4, and the father and daughter had seen each other again since, even celebrating

Father’s Day together. Amanda said her daughter and James were both delighted to be reunited “She’s already calling

him ‘daddy’ and tells him that she loves him,” Amanda said. “They’re both very committed.”

1

What caused Rory Beth to be separated from her father for 12 years?

A

Her parents’ divorce.

B

Her father’s working as a taxi driver.

C

The misunderstanding between them.

D

Her preference for living with her mother.

2

Why did Rory Beth reunite with her father?

A

Her father was eager to see her.

B

She had many questions to ask her father.

C

She was old enough to recognize her father.

D

Her mother thought it was time for her to see her father.

3

B

Rory Beth’s brothers accompanied her to see her father.

C

Rory Beth called James “daddy” on her 12th birthday.

D

Amanda had a conversation with Rory Beth on June 3.

I entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I

lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I searched books for good expressions

and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes-anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one

of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person could not have a "complicated idea" until

he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the words without recognizing either its irony (

嘲讽

)or its very

complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only

once a title I might have read several times. (How, after all, could one read a book more than once?) And I included only

those books over a hundred pages in length. (Could anything shorter be a book?)

There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English

professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the "hundred most important books of Western

Civilization." "More than anything else in my life, "the professor told the reporter with finality," these books have

made me all that I am." That was the kind of words I couldn't ignore. I kept the list for the several months it took me to

read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I

needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the

special patience and superstition (

迷信

)of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by me time I reached the

last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off my list.

1

On heating the teacher's suggestion of reading, the writer thought .

A

one must read as many books as possible

B

a student should not have a complicated idea

C

it was impossible for one to read two thousand books

D

students ought to make a list of the books they had read

2

The underlined phrase "with finality" probably means .

A

firmly B

clearly

C

proudly D

pleasantly

3

The writer's purpose in mentioning The Republic is to .

A

explain why it was included in the list

B

describe why he seriously crossed it off the list

C

show that he read the books blindly though they were hard to understand

D

prove that he understood most of it because he had looked at every word

4

The writer provides two book lists to .

A

show how he developed his point of view

B

tell his reading experience at high school

C

introduce the two persons' reading methods

D

explain that he read many books at high school

Many youths want to lean how to drive cars. This year one sixth of undergraduates in Beijing have

registered at driving school. The students, mostly from majors such as business management or imitational trade, will

finish their driving courses within 20 days or so.

Training costs have dropped to 4, 500 yuan for students, according to the Haidian Driving School in Beijing. The

price is not really low, but students will accept it, seeing it as an investment (

投资

) in their future. Familiarity with the

operation of computers and fluent English are the basic skills graduating students need to find a job. But a driver s

permit has become another factor (

因素

).

“In the job market, owning a driver’s permit sometimes strengthens a graduating student’s competitiveness for a

good position,” says Li Hua, an undergraduate at the China University of Political Science and law.

Cars will become a necessary part of many people’s lives in the coming years, and it is difficult to get a permit out

of campus because of the pressures on working people’s time. “Having a full-time job after graduation offers limited

time to learn to drive. We senior students have plenty of spare time, plenty of oppurtunity to learn,” says another
