Creativity and Innovation of Imperial Examination System in

Ancient China

Thesis Statement：

The creation of imperial examination system was a

pioneering work in ancient China.

General Statement：

The imperial examination was a groundbreaking（开创性的）

civil service examination system in Imperial China designed to

select the best potential candidates to serve as administrative

officials, for the purpose of recruiting them for the state's

bureaucracy.

What Is Imperial Examination：

Imperial examination, a distinguished political system , was

a unique attempt in world history. It was a civil service

examination system in ancient China designed to select the best

potential candidates to serve as administrative officials, for the

purpose of recruiting them for a stable state.

Development：

In Sui Dynasty, for the first time, an examination system was

explicitly instituted for a category of local talents.

In Tang Dynasty, another innovation has been made in the in

the imperial examination system. Before Tang, truly powerful

officials only came from the aristocracy(贵族阶层).

The aristocratic system on national talent selection has been

abolished since Tang, realizing the full meaning of universal

equality. We can say the system of officials election was advanced

even than now.

Innovations：

Compared with the former practices, imperial examination

was more creative. Here are two points：

First, from tang dynasty, regardless of family background ,

the governors picked out officers through a set of tests with strict

rules and common standards , from entry-level exams to imperial

ones , no longer through recommendations. There’re 5 exams

totally and examinees who want to enter the top three must pass

each of them. Only those who got the favour of emperor could

be officers. Thus, it might change the power center from noble

to emperor.

Second, it was also an innovative way for poor people to

improve their class. For instance, Fan Jin who strongly longed to

improve his life and social status had been studying for many

years and took countless exams, no matter how deserted his

fields were and how many people laughed at him. Finally , he

passed the provincial civil service examination at the age of 54.

Innovativeness 创新精神：

The imperial examination system weakened the aristocratic

forces. As a result, an officer came from imperial examination ,

eventhough caming from peasant family, was able to be prime

ministers by doing his best.

Effect on Government：

Through the imperial examination system，the ruling class

in Chinese feudal dynasties had been good fisher of men by

gathering talented people into governments.
