辨析丨Clothes, clothing, apparel, 这些“衣服”有什么区别？
说起表示衣服、服装的词，还真是不少，clothes、clothing、apparel、garb、attire……是不是傻傻分不清啊。
今天，我们要用一种聪明的办法，来辨别各种“衣服”之间的细微差别。
这个方法就是，使用专门的英语搜索引擎，也就是语料库（corpus），这是区别同义词最好的方法。
我们使用的搜索引擎是Subtlexus，这是一个基于口语的包含13.5万条英文句子的在线语料库。
首先，我们利用这个搜索引擎了解一下，各个词在口语里的使用频率。每个词搜索结果如下：
clothes - 5158clothing - 553apparel - 35attire - 76garb - 0
通过数据，可以看出“clothes”是一个非常常用的词。而其他几个词的使用频率就低得多。
接下来，再看看各词经常伴随出现的短语，我们使用美国当代英语语料库（Corpus of Contemporary American English）进行搜索，其给出了以下短语：

通过观察这些常见的词语搭配，是不是大致可以归纳出这几个词之间的差别了呢：
➤当你在讨论人们穿着的衣服的时候（clothes that people wear），“clothes”是最普通最常用的单词（the common word）。
➤“Clothing”在人们将衣服当做温饱必需品（clothes as something that people
need）的时候使用较多。
➤当你在谈论服装销售行业（the business of selling clothing）的时候，"apparel"则使用得较多。
➤“Garb”是某一特定群体的人所穿的不太常见的衣服（unusual clothing that's
worn by a particular group of people）。
➤"Attire"则通常用来谈论某人衣着的正式程度（the level of someone's
dress）。
