Lee, the author of the beloved, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, has
a new book coming out in July, 2015—55 years after Mockingbird was published! The
very private Ms. Lee had never followed up her highly praised first book, with a second
novel. Instead, she’s following it up with a first novel. Confused? So was I! Allow me to
explain.
Go Set a Watchman, was actually written before that classic volume. In the
mid-1950s, Lee had completed Watchman, which features Scout Finch as a young
woman from Alabama living in New York. The story follows Scout as she returns to visit
her father, Atticus, the lawyer who fought racial injustice in Mockingbird.
But as Lee herself put it in a recent announcement through her publisher, “my
editor, who was taken by the flashback (
倒叙
) to Scout’s childhood, persuaded me to
write a novel from the point of view of the young Scout. I was a first-time writer, so I did
as I was told.” That book was, of course, To Kill a Mockingbird, and after it was
released to great praise, Lee never returned to Go Set a Watchman. In fact, that earlier
work was considered lost until Lee’s lawyer found a manuscript (
手稿
) of it.
“After much thought and hesitation I considered it worthy of publication.” said Lee.
“I am amazed that this will now be published after all these years.” So the book that
gave birth to To Kill a Mockingbird will now serve as its sequel (
续集
).
It’s safe to say that, decades after the publication of Mockingbird, millions of
readers who were so touched by Ms. Lee’s second novel will be counting the days until
the release of her first one.

A survey has shown that what you do on a plane can be determined
by which nationality is listed on your passport.
According to the results of an international passenger survey, Australians are the
biggest drinkers on board with 36 percent choosing to down the hatch, compared to 35
percent of Americans and 33 percent of Brits.
The Airline Passenger Experience Association(APEX) spoke to around 1,500 people,
aged 18 and older, who have traveled by plane at least once during the last three months
and were living in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China,
Singapore, Australia and Brazil.
The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off once the seat-belt sign
switches off. They are also the first to take out their credit card for some in-flight
shopping and the biggest fans of gaming. Americans on the other hand like to use their
time in the air more productively---- when not drinking---- choosing to work while flying
at 35,000 feet.
Meanwhile, Brits and Germans are the best at making chat with random
strangers----spending 50 percent more time than any other nationality. Comparatively,
Brazilians conduct their conversations online via email, messaging apps or social media.
Despite plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten interviewees said they
were happy to eat up on the selection of in-flight snacks and meals. In-flight magazines
were also popular with four out of five passengers.
The international flyers did however express their desire for better in-flight
entertainment. “The industry has greatly improved the comfort, entertainment and
onboard service, and passengers are accepting those improvements” said Russell
Lemieux, APEX executive director. “At the same time, passengers are demanding more
from their air travel experiences which will drive more improvements touching all
aspects of the journey.” he added.

B

C
.
more than half of the passengers don’t enjoy plane food
D
.

3

A
.
Flyers care little about entertainment.

Oumuamua,an object through space that was discovered on October
19th, has already made speed at which it is moving relative to the sun means
that it cannot be native to the solar system. Its official name is thus II/2017 UI, with the
“I” standing for “interstellar(
星际
)”—the first time this name has ever been used.
That is scientists, though, entertain an even more exciting possibility:
what if Oumuamua is not an asteroid(
小行星
),as most think, but an alien(
外星
的
)spacecraft? Asteroids come in ll sorts of shapes and sizes, but Oumuamua seems
particularly best as astronomers can tell, it is cigarlike, being roughly 180
meters long but only about 30 meters makes it longer than anything known of
in the solar a shape would be a sensible choice for a spaceship, since it
would minimize the scouring(
冲刷
)effect of interstellar dust.
With that in mind the Breakthrough Listen project, an organization aimed at
hunting for alien life, plans to turn the world’s biggest radio telescope, the Green Bank
instrument in Virginia, towards Oumuamua to see if it can hear anything
ua is currently about twice as far from Earth as Earth is from the
sun. At that range, the telescope should be sensitive enough to pick up a transmitter
about as powerful as a mobile phone after just a few seconds—worthy of observations.
Will it find anything? Almost certainly ua has the same reddish color
as many as asteroids,so probably has a similar , if it really is a
spaceship, it is strange that signs of its artificial origin have not been seen
could, in theory, be a derelict(
遗弃星球
). But in that case the telescope is unlikely to
hear anything. By far the most likely option is that it is exactly what it seems to be: a
huge space rock, one that has come to the solar system from the vast space between the
