A

Facing our future

The face is usually the first thing you notice when looking at someone. Everyone has something about their face

that’s a little different. And that little difference makes facial recognition possible.

You can find this technology in many popular films. In the sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, a powerful

computer is able to “read” the emotions (

情绪

) of astronauts by scanning (

扫描

) their faces. And in the 1987 action

film Robocop, a cyborg (

半人半机器

) police officer identifies (

识别

) a criminal by scanning his photo on a computer.

Today, facial recognition tech is no longer just in films. It has been used as a security measure (

安保手段

) or to

identify threats (

威胁

).

For example, in 2018, facial recognition technology helped identify and catch criminals who were attending

concerts by Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung. And if you use a recent model of Apple’s iPhone, you can unlock the

phone with your face. But these are just a few of the things we can use facial recognition for. The possibilities (

可能

), it seems, are endless (

无尽的

).

Grab, a ride-hailing (

叫车服务

) company in Southeast Asia, is developing facial recognition technology that

can keep passengers safe. The technology works by scanning both the driver’s face and the passenger’s face. This

way, passengers can be sure that their driver is the correct one.

Retailers (

零售商

) are also looking to facial recognition technology to drive (

促进

) business. With the

technology, retailers are able to “see” what their shoppers are actually looking at in stores. Later, they use this

information to provide suggestions (

建议

) for customers in the future.

26

A powerful computer can “read” the________ of astronauts in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

A

emotions B

information C

dreams D

heights

27

The cyborg police officer identifies a criminal by________.

A

scanning his ID card

C

searching for his information

B

scanning his photo

D

tests

28

Grab develops facial recognition technology to________.

A

keep drivers safe

C

limit the number of passengers

B

count the number of cars

D

keep passengers safe

29

With the facial recognition technology, retailers can________.

A

sell more products

B

see daily sales

C

provide accurate suggestions for customers

D

choose better goods

30

According to the passage, the facial recognition technology can be used to________.

A

capture criminals

C

promote products

B

capture emotions

D

All of the above.

Family show ends as a hit

FRIENDSHIP and family have always been things that can strike a chord with anyone. If US sitcom Friends

has proved the former, then Two and a Half Men may well have proved the latter.

The show began airing in 2003. After 12 seasons and more than 260 episodes, the long-running sitcom finally

wrapped up last month. According to The Guardian, it was one of the most-watched TV comedies in the US with

about 15 million regular viewers.

It tells the story of Charlie Harper, a rich ad man with a luxurious beach house; Alan Harper, his recently divorced

brother; and Jake, Alan’s 10-year-old son. “It was a long ride ... In the end, it was good for pretty much everyone,”

commented the New York Daily News. “It is a magical show about men, divorce, single parenthood, love and

friendship.”

The series followed the daily life of Harper brothers—Charlie and Alan. They were almost opposites but formed

a great team. They had little in common except for being scared of their domineering mother, Evelyn.

When the show kicked off, viewers saw that Alan, an uptight control-freak, had just been thrown out from his

home by his wife Judith. Charlie had to give “temporary” shelter to Alan and his son Jake. The sitcom then revolved

around the brothers’ conflicting lifestyles, bantering with their mother and various other friends and family, and most

important of all, raising Jake. The school kid had an efficient, caring dad and had good times with his fun-loving

sugar uncle who taught him boyish things. Charlie gradually grew fond of Jake. Their nephew-uncle relationship was

summed up when Jake said, “I wish my dad was as cool as you,” but Charlie replied, “Don’t sell your dad short. He

loves you more than anything in the world.”

“The show works because it is all built on family,” Ashton Kutcher told US radio station NPR. He plays Walden

Schmidt, a young Internet billionaire, in Two and a Half Men. “It is all built on these obscure, broken, beat up, messed

up families that are just like yours. You can really relate to it, and it’s fun to laugh at. You laugh at it because ultimately

you’re sitting at home laughing at yourself.”

C

Do what you want

I didn’t just want to be a bodybuilding champion. I wanted to be the best bodybuilder of all time.

Deep, deep down ask yourself: “Who do you want to be?” Not what, but who. I’m talking about figuring it out

for yourself: “What makes you happy?”

You have to think outside the box. That’s what I believe, after all. What’s the point of being on this Earth if all

you want to be is be liked and avoid trouble?

We have so many rules in life about everything. I say break the rules. Don’t break the law, but break the rules.

I remember that after I had finished with my bodybuilding career I wanted to act. I wanted to be a star in films.

Everyone had the same thought that it couldn’t be done. They said: “Look at this body, you have this huge monstrous

body, you’re overly developed.” They thought I wouldn’t fit into movies. But I didn’t listen to them. Those were their

rules. I was convinced I could do it.

Then I got my big break in Conan the Barbarian. That shows you should trust yourself no matter what anyone

else thinks.

In that movie, the director said: “If we didn’t have Schwarzenegger, we would have to build one.” Then when I

did The Terminator, I said: “I’ll be back …” One of the most famous lines in movie history, all because of my crazy

accent. It just shows you that you should never listen to those who say you can’t do something.

Don’t be afraid to fail. In everything that I have attempted, I’ve always been willing to fail. Don’t be afraid of

making decisions. You can’t be paralyzed with the fear of failure or you will never push yourself. You can push

because you believe in yourself and your vision. You know it’s the right thing to do and success will come. Don’t be

afraid to fail.

The author thinks that we should________.

We should give up on things that seem impossible to do.

D

The author couldn’t act.

39

“I’ll be back …” is the famous lines in the movie________.
