Hello my pro friends

I may have a lame question, for that I am sorry. I just want to be sure to make right steps, so that I will not do any mistake for our clients.

I have a simple Exchange 2010 server installed. About 30 mailboxes, no special settings. Recently I have bought new HW and I want to move my Exchange to this and switch off old server.

1. I have W2008 on both servers

2. I have Exchange 2010 on both servers

3. Both severs are in same AD and domain controllers

4. AD catalogue has replicated so I have the same computers, users, etc. on both servers

5. Exchange has replicated user mailboxes and both servers see each other in EMC

What I want to do now is to move my mailbox database to the new server. How can I do that ? Can I just copy the file with my database and mount it on the new server ? Do I have to replicate public folders database if we do not use public folders, or is it enough to create new public folders database on the new server and mount it ?

What else do I have to take care of untill I can switch off my old server permanently ?

Hi Jakub,

Are your client access and hub transport roles are on a separate server (or servers) to the old mailbox server? If not, you may want to think about the whole transition process before making any changes … how you’re going to handle all the Exchange roles and not just the mailbox data. You need to think about the web services the Client Access server provides (ie. getting people to use OWA and Outlook Anywhere via the new client access server, certificates, dns, firewall rules etc). You also need to think about mail flow and configuring the hub transport appropriately (connectors, firewall rules etc).

To your question on mailbox data:

You can move the mailboxes from databases on the old server into databases on the new server using move requests. See the below articles about move requests:

Or you could move the mailbox database itself via database portability: technet.microsoft/en-us/library/dd876873(v=exchg.141).aspx.

Database portability is not an option with public folders so if you want to keep them around (perhaps you have applications that still use them or Outlook 2003 clients that require them) you’ll need to create a public folder database on the new server and move all the content to it: technet.microsoft/en-us/library/bb331970(v=exchg.141).aspx.

If you want to remove the public folders completely then have a look at this article to do this properly without leaving references around that may cause you problems in the future: technet.microsoft/en-us/library/dd876883(v=exchg.141).aspx.

Once you've transitioned everything onto the new server, I'd recommend leaving it on for a few days and then checking the various logs (message tracking, IIS etc) to make sure nothing is inadvertently using the older server. Then turn it off for a while and see if anything breaks. Once you're comfortable everything is happily using the new server, power it on and then uninstall Exchange before turning it off permanently.
