I have Windows 8.1 (updated from 8), I use windows updates to install critical updates and have not manually installed/removed any .Net frameworks. Regularily there are security updates for 4.5.2 from windows update but since there is no support for the previous ones anymore no update for those (Since Jan 2016 Support Ended for the .NET Framework 4, 4.5 and 4.5.1 - blogs.msdn.microsoft/dotnet/2015/12/09/support-ending-for-the-net-framework-4-4-5-and-4-5-1/)

You can remove the old versions of .NET framework on your system if you wish, but doing so comes with caveats. I would suggest you had better keep them.

Most likely you have a program already installed on your system that requires a specific version of .NET framework. If you remove the wrong .NET framework, some programs may no longer function. Case and point: if an old program requires .NET framework version 4. The author of the program did not know that the latest version of .NET framework version existed (currently version 4.5.2) because the program is more than a decade old, and because .NET framework version4 was the only version available at the time. As such, this program specifically requests .NET framework version 4 during install onyour system. Therefore, this particular program won't work with .NET framework 4.5.2, though technically it may be compatible.
